Chinese herbal medicine has been using the fruits, leaves and nuts of Ginkgo for centuries to cure a variety of ailments.

In the modern western world though the main ingredient in herbal Ginkgo supplements is a standardized Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract (GBE) is made by processing dried leaves from the Ginkgo Biloba tree to extract the active ingredients.

Standardized preparations contain 24 percent ginkgo flavonoid glycosides, 6 percent terpene lactones, and no more than 5 parts per million ginkgolic acids. [1]

Ginkgo is one of the most throughfully researched alternative medicines with more than 120 published clinical studies, mostly from Europe. It is also the most commonly bought herbal supplement in Europe where it is used by older middle age people to prevent declining memory.

There is two common standardized ginkgo extracts, EGb 761 which is patented in Europe and CP401 which is patented in the United States.

Where is Ginkgo Extract Used?

Ginkgo extract is currently used to cure or reduce the symptoms of the following diseases:

Cerebrovascular disease, dementia, bad memory, intermittent claudication, tinnitus, sexual dysfunction secondary to the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, mountain sickness and decreasing vasoactivity in response to cold, macular degeneration, asthma, hypoxia, Raynaud's disease, acrocyanosis, and post-phlebitic syndrome. For many of these research is still under way to determine what the benefits are and to find possible side effects.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract EGb 761

Also known as EGb761, EGb-761, GBE 761, GBE 761 ONC, GBE-761, Rokan, Tanakan, Tebofortran, Tebokan or Tebonin, GinkgoGold, Quater

EGb 761 is a highly standardized Ginkgo leaf extract made and marketed by the German pharmaceutical company Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co

EGb 761 contains 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides and has had the terpene trilactones enriched to 6% (3.1% ginkgolides A, B, C and 2.9% bilobalide) and the allergenic ginkgolic acids removed down to a few ppm.

Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH & Co holds United States Patent 5,399,348 and European Patent No. 0431535 B1 for the manufacturing process of the EGb 761 extract

The extract EGb 761 is commonly used in clinical tests involving Ginkgo and is also an ingredient in many herbal supplies.

EGb 761 id used in treatment of peripheral vascular disease and cerebral insufficiency. It is an ingredient of Ginkor.
